The time is ripe to do right

Dedicated individuals of faith are working tirelessly - calling their Member of Congress weekly, writing letters to the editor, preaching to their congregations - to bring our country closer than ever before to passing comprehensive health reform legislation. 

Together with allies, they are helping bring our nation closer to ending the insurance company practices of excluding people for pre-existing conditions and raising premiums when people get sick.  They are helping move us closer to protecting families from drowning in medical debt by capping out-of-pocket expenses.

Yet as we move closer to this historic achievement, the opposition grows stronger, demanding that legislation address every problem in the health care system all at once.

As Dr. King wrote, "justice too long delayed is justice denied."  Failure to pass health reform legislation this year could derail any efforts at reform for years to come, which would be a disaster for our families as well as for our economy.

The way to progress is never easy.  We must ensure that our elected leaders stay focused on the goal of reducing the suffering that too many of our family members, friends, neighbors, and fellow congregation members have experienced and continue to experience because of reform too long delayed.  Passing legislation this year will create the momentum we need to continue to make health care work better for those we love.

As people who feel the pinch of rising health care costs and eroding coverage, we need the health care debate to stay focused on constructive ideas that keep reform moving forward, not backward.  The time is ripe for action.
